Choose Dragon if you are producing documents by speaking — clinical notes, legal drafting, long-form writing — on Windows, and you want the words to appear in the application you are already using. You can teach it words no model has seen: in-house jargon, client names, a private shorthand. Dragon Professional runs entirely offline, which matters in a clinic or a courtroom.
Choose Otter.ai if the audio is a conversation you are part of rather than a text you are composing. Otter joins the call, records it, separates the speakers and hands you a searchable, shareable transcript with a summary. Dragon does not attempt any of that.
The common mistake is buying Dragon to transcribe meetings, or Otter to write documents. Both disappoint, and neither is the product’s fault.

Can Dragon transcribe recorded meetings?+
It can transcribe recorded audio, but it is built around a single trained speaker, so a multi-person meeting recording is not what it is good at. It will not separate speakers or summarise the discussion. For meetings, Otter is the right shape of tool.
Can Otter.ai be used for dictation instead of Dragon?+
You can dictate into Otter, but the text lands in Otter rather than in the document you are writing, so you copy it across afterwards. Dragon types directly into the application you are using. If dictation is the main job, that difference dominates.
Which is more accurate?+
It depends on the audio. On one speaker dictating into a headset, Dragon is strong, and general-purpose recognition usually handles ordinary clinical, legal and technical terminology without a domain pack. We have benchmarked no competitor, so that is the shape of the difference rather than a measured result. On a multi-speaker recording with background noise, Otter is built for the problem and Dragon is not. Neither is simply more accurate than the other.
Does either work on Mac or Linux?+
Dragon Professional is Windows-only. Otter is a web service, so it opens anywhere, but it is not a dictation tool that types into your applications. If you want Dragon-style dictation on macOS or Linux, neither of these is the answer.
