Twenty years of Windows dictation depth, bought outright and run offline, against a cross-platform subscription with nothing to train. Which one you need depends on how unusual your requirements are.
Which should you pick, VibeVoice or Dragon NaturallySpeaking?
Pick Dragon if you need dictation with no network — a clinic, a courtroom, a secure site — or a vocabulary you train yourself with in-house jargon and client names. Pick VibeVoice if you are not on Windows, do not want to spend around $699 up front, and have no unusual requirements.
This is not old against new. A cloud tool needs a network, and while some of them take a word list, training a profile to one speaker’s voice is Dragon’s own. If you need either, it still earns its price.

Nothing to train first
No reading scripts and no acoustic profile to enrol. There is nothing to do before your first sentence.
Monthly against once
A Dragon licence is about €880 in Germany with VAT, paid once and yours to keep. This is €3 a month and stops when you stop paying. Over three years that is roughly €108 against about €880 — which way round that falls depends on how long you expect to use it.

Dragon Professional runs on Windows only, and its Mac version was discontinued. One account here covers Windows, macOS and Linux.
Which one should you actually pick?
We built VibeVoice, so treat this as our view — but these are the cases where we would tell you to buy Dragon instead.
Choose Dragon if…
- You need to teach it words no model has seen — internal product names, client names, a private case-file shorthand. Dragon lets you add custom vocabulary and correct it into a personal profile; we do not.
- You need dictation that keeps working without a network connection — in a clinic, a courtroom, on a machine that is offline most of the day. VibeVoice sends audio to a server; Dragon Professional runs locally.
- Your workflow depends on Dragon’s voice-command macros for controlling Windows applications by speech. That is a different product category from voice typing, and we do not replace it.
Choose VibeVoice if…
- You are not on Windows. Dragon Professional is Windows-only; VibeVoice runs natively on macOS and Linux as well.
- You do not want to spend €880 before finding out whether dictation suits you.
- You would rather not begin with profile setup and a training passage. Dragon recommends both; there is nothing to skip here.
- You want the same dictation wherever the cursor is, including a browser, a terminal and an IDE, rather than deep integration with a few.
VibeVoice vs Dragon: common questions
Is VibeVoice a good Dragon alternative?+
For everyday professional dictation on a Mac or a Linux machine, yes: Dragon Professional is Windows-only and its Mac version was discontinued. For offline work, voice macros that drive Windows, or a vocabulary you train yourself, no — Dragon still does those and we do not.
Is VibeVoice accurate enough for medical or legal dictation?+
Usually, for the vocabulary itself. Ordinary clinical, legal and technical terms — common drug names, anatomy, dosages, case citations — generally come through without a domain pack, and we publish how we measure accuracy rather than asserting a number. Dragon’s remaining advantage is not raw vocabulary but customisation: you can add words it has never heard and correct it into a personal profile. If your work turns on in-house jargon nobody outside your building uses, that still matters — and if the audio may not leave the building, Dragon Professional runs offline and we do not.
Does VibeVoice need voice training like Dragon?+
No. There is no enrolment step and no voice profile. The model is speaker-independent: nothing to teach it before your first sentence, and nothing that has adapted to you by your thousandth either. Dragon’s training exists because its recognition adapts to one speaker; ours does not need to.
Can I run VibeVoice offline like Dragon?+
No. VibeVoice streams audio to our servers in Germany and returns text, which is what lets an ordinary laptop keep up however long you dictate. Dragon Professional runs entirely on your machine — Nuance’s Anywhere products do not, so it is that one specifically. If offline operation is a hard requirement, it is the correct choice.
What happens to my audio?+
It is deleted as soon as the transcript exists or the attempt fails, and it is never used to train any model. A transcript from an uploaded file stays in your account until you delete it; dictation through the client is not stored. Full detail is in our privacy policy.
How much does VibeVoice cost compared to Dragon?+
Dragon Professional is a one-time purchase of around $699. VibeVoice is free for 30 minutes a month, €3 a month for Pro and €10 for Ultra. Over three years Pro comes to roughly €108 against Dragon’s €880 or so up front.
