What a typing rate is worth knowing for

Neither number decides anything on its own. Typing is silent, works in a shared office and lets you edit as you go; speaking is faster and needs somewhere you can talk. The gap is only useful if the writing you do is the kind you could say out loud.

How is words per minute calculated here?+
The standard way: every 5 characters you type counts as one word, and the clock runs from your first keystroke to your last. Counting characters rather than spaces is what makes rates comparable between tests and between languages.
Why is my score higher than my real writing speed?+
Because copying is the easiest thing a keyboard is ever asked to do. There is no deciding what to say, nothing to look up and no going back to rewrite a paragraph. Treat the number as an upper bound on how fast you produce text, not as how fast you write.
How fast do people speak?+
Conversational speech runs at about 150 words a minute, and dictation sits near that because you are talking at an ordinary pace rather than reading aloud. That figure is what the comparison under your result uses.
Is my result saved?+
